A Midsummer Day's Dream

Please, Come Into My Garden

Stop a minute and let the Summer Morning fill you with Gladness!

It is the time of year that the Roses are just past their first flush of bloom,
with some blossoms lingering still....

These are the fiery summer blooms of "Salsa"... a rose that is new to my garden....
I could NOT resist the color!

And this one is "Social Climber".... in spite of it's name it is one of my favorite roses.....

The first of the Daylilies are starting to bloom........

But the roses are not quite finished..... this one is "New Dawn" an outstanding climber!

Reaching for the sky!
Can you BELIEVE that color?

And the little yellow rose I cannot remember the name of.....
note to self....... go look it up!

And the David Austin rose "Falstaff"..... with a complex blossom and a heady scent!

But midsummer is that time when the Roses hand the baton of Summer to the lilies.......
This one blooms early and has a delicate lemon scent.....
it came from my former Father-in-law's garden....

And this one is "Miss Ozzie" another lovely sweetly scented variety.......

And this one I have no idea of the name.....
it was from one of those fifty plants of various sorts packages....
and a lovely surprise when it bloomed!

And the fading blooms of the "New Dawn" rose.... getting a bit blowsey.....

And the Lavender begins to blossom with its heavenly scent........

Framing the sweet cherub in clouds of purple!

And the annual petunias are starting to shine.......

I ADORE this dark purple variety ..... for the color and the heavenly scent!

The "William Baffin" rose does NOT give up!

And the "New Dawn" still bravely blooming......

While the Daylilies slowly take over......
This one is called "Little Purple"!

And check out the color on this one....... I do not know its name.....

And this one I think is called "Chicago" but I am not sure.... I bought it a Long time ago.....

This exotic Daylily is called "Inwood" .... I think...... got to look it up!

But I think I love the splendid simplicity of this early Yellow one the best.....

And of course, my favorite weed of all time...
Queen Anne's Lace is just starting to bloom.....

I'm so glad you could stop by for a little visit to my Midsummer Garden.......

  1. Betsy, how much time do you devote to the garden for all these wonders of nature to bloom the way they do? There are so many varieties! Do they all need different care? What actually do you need to do or are you just blessed with green thumbs? May I know how big is that garden?

  2. Dear Sans!, do you want me to write a BOOK about it? Hee hee... You are looking at a quite small garden only about 25 feet square.... and a good bit of that is covered with the brick pavers... except that I do keep expanding the outer edges and have started a new Rose garden to the side of the first garden... so It is an ever changing project. Yes, I have a green thumb. My philosophy is to try the plants you love, and either they thrive or they don't! I do very little beyond planting and weeding once the garden is dug (one of my favorite parts!).I have Dozens of roses.... and dozens of daylilies..... peonies, phlox, foxgloves, beebalm, lavender, to name just a few..... and the plant list is ever changing as some do not thrive. I do divide them when they become too large.... a task I need to do this year. Ideally it is done every three or four years. This is my fourth summer in this garden. My old garden at my former home was MUCH larger and was truly beyond my own abilities to maintain.... I am too ambitious in the designing... but even as it was overgrown and invaded by the native flowers ie. weeds, it was beautiful and inspiring for my paintings! And my camera! I have thousands of photos of that garden.... because I only could bring about forty of my original plants with me to the new home.... dug up, potted temporarily and moved in the back of my car! I LOVE my garden!
I am SO glad you have come for a visit.... and I am glad you asked! (I hope I have not bored you...:))!

  3. Betsy, such beauties! I'm in love with your garden. It has all the elements of a beautiful painting, and that wonderful balance between your design and letting the plants dance to their own music. I have a neighbor who is trying to have a go at roses, but this really isn't a rose kind of place, so I was starting to forget what happy roses actually look like. And I miss day lilies, the side of my childhood home was lined with orange ones, and they would paint our bare legs with pollen when we walked past them. See, your garden is bringing back memories. Thank you so much for that.

  4. Thank you, Amy! That is such high praise ....for a garden I let run a little wild! I love my gardens a little bit unkempt.... because I love what Nature does with them.... adding her own rampant touch! I have been intending to do another post with MORE lilies, but have been so busy. But there will be more soon! I'm glad to share this garden with those who appreciate it.... and I'm glad it stirs lovely memories too!
